Tips & Tidbits
With planning and getting everything together for summer camp, it's a crazy busy time for everyone! I'm starting to think a lot about the most important tips for a great summer camp. This will be my first camp with CAN, but I've spent my fair share of summers as both a camper and counselor, so here are some tips that I've found helpful for surviving summer.
Take breaks! This seems like a no-brainer, but it's so important to remember to coordinate with your team and, if it's helpful, put it in writing on the camp schedule! This can be a great reminder to you and the kids that everyone needs to take a break, especially from the heat.
Be consistent. From day one, it's essential that everyone - campers and staff - is on the same page about the rules and expectations for coming to camp, and equally enforces them.
Communicate! Morning check-ins, debrief after camp, and a team group chat are great places to communicate about the events of the day to make sure that everyone is caught up on each kid's ups and downs and inform how tomorrow will go.
Hydrate 💧 Both kids and adults need reminders to drink water in the summer heat. Keeping the freezer stocked with ice cubes, setting hourly timers for "Drop everything and drink water!" breaks, and letting the kids decorate their water bottles are all great ways to motivate kids to hydrate.
